Tesla Cybertruck Sales Inflated by Elon Musk's Other Companies Including SpaceX

other · 2026-04-19

Tesla Cybertruck sales have been artificially boosted by purchases from Elon Musk's other companies, with SpaceX accounting for 1,279 of the 7,071 vehicles registered in the U.S. during Q4 2025. This represents over 18% of quarterly registrations. Musk's ventures including xAI, Neuralink, and the Boring Company acquired another 60 Cybertrucks during that period. Without these inter-company transactions, sales would have dropped 51% year-over-year in Q4 2025. The purchases continued into 2026, with 225 more vehicles bought by Musk-owned businesses in the first two months. S&P Global Mobility registration data reveals these transactions, which could represent over $100 million in value based on the $70,000 starting price. Elon Musk once predicted Tesla would need to produce 250,000 Cybertrucks annually to meet demand, but the vehicle has struggled during its two-plus years on the market. AutoForecast Solutions vice president Sam Fiorani told Bloomberg that 'Tesla is running out of buyers for the Cybertruck.' The vehicle faces challenges including divisive design, higher-than-expected pricing, and multiple recalls. Tesla's overall sales have declined for three consecutive years, with BYD surpassing it as the world's top EV seller. Musk has attempted to shift Tesla's focus toward ambitious projects like robotaxis and humanoid robots, though these remain years from realization.
