Teppei Kaneuji's 'Zones' exhibition at MIMOCA explores materiality and popular culture through diverse works

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Between 17 July and 6 November 2016, the MIMOCA Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art showcased 'Zones', an exhibition dedicated to Teppei Kaneuji's creations, which included more than 125 works such as paintings, sculptures, and videos. A key focus was the exploration of meaning through both image and material, particularly evident in the White Discharge series, where items were enveloped in white liquid to obscure their original shapes, inspired by snow’s ability to create uniformity. The Ghost in the Liquid Room series featured isolated visuals of makeup and chocolate drips, highlighting the disconnect between image and meaning. The exhibition also critiqued artifacts of popular culture, emphasizing imaginative interpretations and negative spaces. A review was published in ArtReview Asia in Autumn 2016.
