artist · 2026-04-27

Teodosio Magnoni, the Italian sculptor known for exploring the concept of 'space-place,' died on September 13, 2021, in Sutri (Viterbo) at age 87. Born in 1934 in Offanengo, Cremona, he studied at the Accademia d'Arte Carrara di Bergamo under Achille Funi. Influenced by Alexander Calder and kinetic art, he moved from painting to sculpture after seeing the 1961 exhibition 'Rörelse I Konsten' at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. By the 1970s, he created works like 'Volterra 73' that emphasized the relationship between sculpture and its surrounding space. Influenced by Heidegger, he worked by subtraction, abandoning color and narrative. His public works include 'Colonna trasparente' (1993) for FAO headquarters, 'Torre dei colori che cambiano' (2002) for Fiumicino Airport, 'Ara' (2007) in Brufa Sculpture Park, and his final piece 'Torre Tuscia' (2019) in Capranica. He was a member of the Accademia di San Luca from 2009 and exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1976 and 1978.
