Tennis invades Rome: clay court at Piazza del Popolo for Internazionali
The Italian Tennis Federation, in agreement with Rome's city administration, has set up a regulation clay tennis court in Piazza del Popolo, beneath the Pincio terrace and the Flaminio obelisk, for the pre-qualifications of the Internazionali di tennis (Masters 1000). The court will host two free matches per day until May 4, 2024, with additional nets for public play and coaching for beginners. The initiative is part of a broader program that included the official presentation inside the Colosseum and the draw at the Fontana di Trevi. The main tournament runs from May 6 to 19 at the Foro Italico, featuring top players and heightened interest due to Jannik Sinner's recent triumphs. The project aims to promote sports culture, hosting also the Under 16 international tournament and activities coordinated by Michelangelo Dell'Edera for the Istituto Superiore di Formazione 'Roberto Lombardi'. Rome's Sports Assessor Alessandro Onorato called it 'a dream come true' and praised the FITP, Sport e Salute, and all contributors. Rain may alter the schedule, but the court remains until 4 May evening.
