Ten Landmarks Proposed as New Wonders of the World

TheCollector proposes ten landmarks as candidates for an expanded list of wonders of the world, arguing that the original Seven Wonders were confined to the Mediterranean and compiled over two millennia ago. The list includes the Acropolis in Greece, a 5th-century BCE symbol of democracy attracting over 23,000 daily visitors; the Moai statues on Easter Island, Chile, carved by the Rapa Nui people between 1100 and 1500 CE; the Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines, built over 2,000 years ago by the Ifugao people; Stonehenge in the UK, constructed from around 3000 BCE using Sarsen stones and bluestones transported from Wales; the Terracotta Army in China, discovered in 1974 in Shaanxi province, created to accompany Emperor Qin Shi Huang; Angkor Wat in Cambodia, built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman as a Hindu temple later turned Buddhist, covering 400 acres; the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, built during the Nasrid Dynasty in the 13th and 14th centuries; the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, begun in 1173 and completed in 1372, now stabilized at a 4-degree lean; the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa in Alexandria, Egypt, dating to the 2nd century CE; and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, completed in 1889 for the World's Fair, designed by Gustave Eiffel, standing 1,083 feet tall.
