Tehran Gallery Shields Paintings in Felt During War

Amid the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States, which began on February 28, 2026, Tehran's Didar Gallery presented 'This is a Painting Exhibition' by artist Jahanshir, curated by Parsa Farsha. The exhibition featured paintings wrapped in multiple layers of felt, a protective measure Jahanshir used in his studio during the attacks. When he left Tehran for Tabriz to be with family, he assured Farsha the works were safe. Upon his return, the felt coverings were kept on the paintings in the gallery, transforming the protective material into part of the artistic experience. The gallery itself bore damage from the conflict, with a collapsed section of ceiling and cracks in the walls. The exhibition highlighted the resilience of Iran's independent art scene, which relies on personal relationships and careful economic management. Many artists continue to produce work, and galleries are resuming exhibitions despite the uncertainty. The felt-covered paintings symbolize the necessity of preserving art in wartime, making the private act of protection a public statement.
