Tehching Hsieh to present new work for Taiwan at 2017 Venice Biennale
Tehching Hsieh, a performance artist, will represent Taiwan at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, as announced by the Taipei Fine Art Museum. British curator Adrian Heathfield is organizing the pavilion, where Hsieh will create a fresh version of his One Year Performances series from 1978 to 1999. These works involve intense physical and mental tests that explore time and human existence. In 1978, for his Cage Piece, Hsieh confined himself to a cage in his studio for a full year, with minimal supplies and restrictions on communication and entertainment. His influential pieces have been displayed at New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in 2009. In 2014, artist Miao Jiaxin referenced Hsieh in the Jail's Seeking Prisoners project, renting out a Brooklyn cell via Airbnb for $1 per night under conditions mimicking Cage Piece, with live online streaming. David Everitt Howe reviewed the project after participating.
