Tehching Hsieh Receives 2025 Tung Chung Prize and Retrospective at Dia Beacon
Taiwanese American artist Tehching Hsieh has been honored with the 2025 Tung Chung Prize Special Achievement Award by Taipei's Hong Foundation. The NTD 1 million (USD 32,545) prize, now in its tenth year, recognizes artists of Taiwanese descent for exceptional contributions to contemporary art. Hsieh's first retrospective, "Tehching Hsieh: Lifeworks 1978–1999," will be presented at Dia Beacon in New York through 2027, supported by the foundation. Born in 1950 in Nanzhou, southern Taiwan, Hsieh moved to the United States in 1974. The exhibition features documentation and objects from his radical long-term performances, including projects where he spent a year locked in a cage, lived outdoors for another year, and was tied to another artist with a rope. Works from his Thirteen Year Plan (1986–99), which remained unseen publicly for over a decade, are also displayed. Grace Cheung, executive director of the Hong Foundation, praised Hsieh's art for addressing themes of migration, freedom, endurance, and personal beliefs. Hsieh expressed gratitude for the foundation's support, noting the award's profound meaning. Iain Cocks reported on the event for ArtAsiaPacific.
