Tefaf New York 2019: Top 10 Stands Selected by Artribune

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

During New York's Art Week, Tefaf New York 2019 at the Park Avenue Armory showcased a high-end fair with a focus on modern and contemporary art. The fair's opening preview attracted billionaires whose combined wealth exceeded the GDP of a medium-sized nation. Despite cramped stands and some weak presentations (notably Hauser & Wirth), the fair continues to strengthen its role in the city. Artribune's Massimiliano Tonelli selected the top 10 stands: Ben Brown featured early Gerhard Richter works from 1968; Axel Vervoordt presented a group including Opalka, Fontana, Yoshihara, and others in a Palazzo Fortuny-like setting; Hauser & Wirth had an all-female stand with works by Maria Lassnig, Louise Bourgeois, and Alina Szapocznikow; Massimo De Carlo dedicated its stand to John Armleder; Galerie Kamel Mennour offered a solo show of Bertrand Lavier with a sculpture-piano for his 70th birthday; Perrotin showed works on paper by Hans Hartung from the 1950s and 1960s; Cardi Gallery featured Lucio Fontana's two-million-euro work with large pink slashes, a Giorgio de Chirico from the 1920s, and a Carla Accardi sold quickly; Galerie Thaddeus Ropac presented a solo show of Georg Baselitz with drawings and a large painting; Galerie Karsten Greve focused on Italian art with Cy Twombly, Lucio Fontana ceramics, and two Morandis; Lehmann Maupin, despite questioning the fair's modern focus, showed new works by Hernan Bas.
