After a pandemic hiatus, TEFAF Maastricht opens June 25, 2022, with 242 galleries from 20 countries, including 21 first-time exhibitors and 6 in TEFAF Showcase. The fair spans 7,000 years of art, from antiquities to contemporary. Highlights include Frans Pourbus the Younger's portrait of Vincenzo Gonzaga (1602) at The Weiss Gallery, Luca Giordano's newly discovered 'Trionfo di Galatea' (1675) at Colnaghi, Henry Moore's 'Maquette of Mother and Child with Apple' (1956) from MoMA's collection at Van de Weghe, Francis Picabia's 'Untitled (La Magia del Caso)' (1948) at David Lévy & Associés, Thomas Gainsborough's chalk drawing 'Wooded Landscape with Oxen and Goats' at Stephen Ongpin Fine Art, Vik Muniz's 'Demoiselles d'Avignon, Pablo Picasso (Surfaces)' at Ben Brown Fine Arts, and a rare life-size Buddha from the Sukhothai kingdom at Marcel Nies Oriental Art. Italy is represented by 23 galleries including Altomani & Sons, Cardi Gallery, Galleria Continua, and Tornabuoni Art. The TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund celebrates its 10th anniversary by funding restoration of Vincent van Gogh's 'Poplars near Nuenen' (1885) from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. TEFAF president Hidde van Seggelen expressed excitement about reuniting the gallery community and aligning with other European art events in June, making the continent a prime destination for collectors.
