Tech Chief Gridlock: 71% of Companies Have Five or More AI-Focused C-Suite Leaders

Corporate boards are increasingly appointing technology executives to the C-suite to tackle issues arising from AI, but this trend is resulting in a leadership dilemma instead of effective solutions. Deloitte's 2026 Global Technology Leadership Study indicates that 71% of companies now employ at least five technology leaders within their C-suite, which includes roles such as chief information security officer for security, chief technology officer for AI infrastructure, chief data officer for data management, and frequently, a chief AI officer overseeing the others. However, the study reveals that 41% of these leaders are perceived by their CEOs and boards as struggling to keep pace with the rapid transformation brought on by AI. This situation underscores a critical problem: an abundance of tech chiefs leads to confusion regarding authority, compounded by overlapping responsibilities and the swift advancement of AI, resulting in an organizational framework that may be as challenging as the issues it aims to address.
