Teatro Ventoforte Demolished by São Paulo City Hall Sparks Public Outcry and Legislative Hearing

On February 13, city tractors unexpectedly demolished the Teatro Ventoforte, established in 1974 by Ilo Krugli in São Paulo's Parque do Povo, burying important archival items, including a piano by Fritz Dobbert. The Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) condemned this action on February 19, highlighting the harm done to intangible heritage. A public hearing scheduled for February 18 at the Assembleia Legislativa do Estado de São Paulo will address the reconstruction of performance venues. The newly created Associação Memória Viva Ventoforte intends to handle discussions with officials. The demolition, which was backed by a complaint from the Itaim residents' association, has drawn criticism for disregarding the site's cultural importance. Many artists have voiced their sorrow, and Funarte president Maria Marighella stressed the urgency of rebuilding.
