Teatro Olimpico di Vicenza to Close for Year-Long Restoration
At the end of 2027, the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, recognized as the oldest existing indoor theater, will undergo a restoration and safety enhancement lasting approximately 300 days, costing 2 million euros. Mayor Giacomo Possamai revealed that the project will focus on seismic reinforcement and safety upgrades, primarily financed by the Ministry of Culture with 1,745,000 euros. Additionally, the Municipality will contribute 250,000 euros for a new fire prevention and surveillance system. Designed by Andrea Palladio, the theater's construction began in 1580 but was completed by his son Silla after Palladio passed away. It opened on March 3, 1585, with a performance of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, located at Piazza Matteotti, 11, Vicenza.
