Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber Reopens in Milan After Decades
Milan's Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber is set to reopen in September 2021 after over twenty years of restoration work. Mayor Beppe Sala announced the reopening, highlighting the theater's historical significance and modern technological and environmental upgrades. The theater, originally built in 1779 as the Cannobiana, was designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini and has a turbulent history of fires, closures, and restorations. It hosted the premiere of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore in 1832 and served as a venue for La Scala performances after WWII bombings. The latest restoration began in 1999 but faced delays due to asbestos discovery, legal issues, technical problems, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The theater will be managed by Stage Entertainment and will seat 1,517 people, with an enlarged foyer and a panoramic restaurant. An open day is planned for September before the official premiere.
