Teatro di Corte della Reggia di Caserta opens with extended hours

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Teatro di Corte at the Reggia di Caserta, a unique court theater designed by Luigi Vanvitelli and inaugurated in 1769 during the carnival visit of Queen Maria Carolina, will be open to the public with extended hours from October 1, 2024, through winter 2025. Unlike other European court theaters located in separate buildings, this one is integrated into the palace's circulation system. The theater features a horseshoe shape with five tiers of boxes decorated by Gaetano Magri, alabaster columns, and a frescoed ceiling by Crescenzo La Gamba depicting Apollo trampling the serpent Python. A distinctive feature is an opening behind the stage that uses the Malalocata garden as a natural backdrop, first employed in 1722 for Metastasio's "Didone abbandonata." The visit is included in the museum ticket but not on free admission days. From October 1 to 31, 2024, it is open Monday to Friday 8:30-13:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00-13:00 (with Touring Club Italiano collaboration). From November 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, excluding holidays, hours are Monday to Friday 8:30-13:00 and 15:30-19:15, Saturday and Sunday 10:00-13:00. Same schedule applies March 1-31, 2025.
