Teatro della Tosse in Genoa celebrates 50 years with 'Ubu Roi' revival

The Teatro della Tosse in Genoa marks its 50th anniversary by restaging 'Ubu Roi,' the play that inaugurated the theater in 1975. Founded by Tonino Conte, Emanuele Luzzati, and Aldo Trionfo, the theater opened with Alfred Jarry's seminal work. The new production, directed by Emanuele Conte, premiered on October 16, 2025, at the Sala Trionfo - Teatri di S. Agostino. The staging reimagines the play as a TV interview, featuring both veteran actors like Enrico Campanati, Pietro Fabbri, and Susanna Gozzetti, and younger talents including Ludovica Baiardi, Antonella Loliva, Sarah Pesca, Marco Rivolta, and Marco Taddei. Emanuele Conte also designed the sets, which incorporate antique furniture and books. The production runs until October 26, 2025. Alfred Jarry, author of 'Ubu Roi,' is considered a precursor to futurism, Dada, and surrealism. His work, debuting in 1896 in Paris, influenced 20th-century avant-garde movements with its absurdist critique of power. The play's themes of conspiracy, ambition, and geopolitical division remain relevant today.
