Teatro alla Scala's workshops to relocate to Milan's Rubattino district

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Teatro alla Scala will move its workshops to the former Innocenti plant in Rubattino, an industrial area in Milan's Lambrate district. The agreement between the Municipality of Milan and Rubattino 87 S.r.l. covers approximately 194,000 m². The site will host the Scala's costume, carpentry, and set design workshops, rehearsal spaces, archives, and storage for 70,000 costumes. An international design competition called 'Magnifica Fabbrica' has been launched, with a prize of €270,000 for the winner and €12,500 for six finalists. The project includes a research and innovation center, an ATM depot, and a 70,000 m² expansion of Parco Lambretta. The total cost is €120 million, funded by the PNRR. The competition's first phase closes in January 2022, with winners announced in May 2022. Completion is expected by 2026. Mayor Giuseppe Sala and urban planning assessor Pierfrancesco Maran highlighted the project's sustainability and cultural impact. The move coincides with the opening of the M4 metro line's first section in mid-2021, connecting Linate Airport to Forlanini.
