teamLab's Glowing Sunflowers Illuminate Osaka's Nagai Botanical Garden

International art collective teamLab has unveiled a new interactive installation, 'Life is the Small Sun Flickering in the Dark,' at Nagai Botanical Garden in Osaka, Japan. The work transforms approximately 20,000 white sunflowers into a luminous nighttime artwork that responds to the presence of visitors and wildlife. When a person or animal approaches a sunflower, it becomes more intensely illuminated and emits a resonant sound, triggering waves of light and sound that travel through the field. The installation opened on August 1, 2026, at teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka, the collective's permanent nighttime open-air museum within the garden, and will remain on view through August 16, 2026. The work is part of teamLab's 'Digitized Nature' concept, which uses digital systems to interact with natural environments rather than recreate them. The garden itself spans approximately 240,000 square meters and contains around 1,200 plant species. The installation's presentation depends on the seasonal blooming of the sunflowers, giving it a natural lifespan. Sound for the piece was created by Hideaki Takahashi. The project builds on teamLab's ongoing initiative to integrate digital art with existing natural landscapes, which began with the opening of teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka in 2022.
