teamLab Opens Digital Art Museum in Tokyo
On June 21, 2018, the MORI Building Digital Art Museum: teamLab Borderless opens in Tokyo's Odaiba district, a futuristic artificial island. The museum spans 10,000 square meters with approximately 50 works across five main areas, designed without boundaries between artworks or between art and visitors. The Japanese collective teamLab, founded in 2001, comprises 500 members including engineers, programmers, and architects. Their work merges figurative art with virtual reality to create immersive, interactive installations. Communication director Takashi Kudo explains that technology is a tool, not the focus; the collective prioritizes the concept of the digital and how it can expand art. Unlike Silicon Valley tech that extends the individual self, teamLab focuses on physical space and collective experience, using digitalization to positively transform perceptions of others. A concurrent exhibition, Au-delà des limites, runs at La Villette in Paris until September 9, covering 2,000 square meters. The museum represents a new model where digital art, freed from material constraints, allows visitors to explore with their bodies and form connections with others, dissolving boundaries between people, art, and time.
