Taysir Batniji's 'Abitare il tempo' at Fondazione Ago Modena

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Fondazione Ago in Modena presents 'Abitare il tempo', the first Italian solo exhibition by Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji (born Gaza, 1966). The show features around 100 works including photographs, drawings, sculptures, and installations that explore themes of displacement, memory, exile, and the impossibility of returning home. Batniji, who left Gaza in 1994 and now lives in Paris, has been unable to return since 2022 due to the Israeli blockade. Key works include photographs of hundreds of key rings representing lost homes, frottage drawings of Gaza streets, blurred screenshots of attacks on Gaza, and the installation 'Non di solo pane vive l'uomo'—350 Marseille soap bars inscribed with Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which degrades over time. The series 'Distruptions' (2015–2017) captures screenshots of video calls with his mother and family in Palestine, while 'Fathers' (2006) collects portraits of shop founders from Gaza. Batniji stated he has lost over 100 family members and friends, and his childhood home no longer exists. The exhibition runs at Palazzina dei Giardini Ducali.
