Trademark attorney Josh Gerben was the first to report these filings, which are designed to protect her voice and image from unauthorized exploitation in deepfake media. One application features Swift performing in a sparkly bodysuit with a pink guitar. The audio clips include her promoting "The Life of a Showgirl" on Amazon Music Unlimited and Spotify. If granted, these trademarks would encompass various entertainment services. Swift's likeness has been misused in deepfakes for false advertising and explicit content, leading to a study identifying her and Donald Trump as top targets. In 2024, X restricted searches for Swift after explicit AI images circulated, prompting U.S. senators to propose legislation against nonconsensual deepfake pornography. Swift's initiative mirrors similar actions by Matthew McConaughey, who trademarked video clips and his famous "Alright, alright, alright" phrase. Gerben highlights that this approach to trademark law is unprecedented and suggests Swift could pursue infringement claims if her registered voice or unique visuals are misused.
