Tatzu Nishi's 'Discovering Columbus' Installation at Columbus Circle

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Tatzu Nishi's public art installation 'Discovering Columbus' was presented by Public Art Fund from September 20 to November 18, 2012. The work transformed the Christopher Columbus statue in Columbus Circle, New York City, by constructing a temporary living room around it. Visitors could access the elevated space via a staircase, experiencing the monument at eye level within a domestic setting. This intervention allowed unprecedented proximity to the 1892 sculpture, recontextualizing a familiar landmark. The project was documented by Tom Powel Imaging. An announcement about the installation appeared on artcritical on October 26, 2012.
