Tattoo. Histories of the Mediterranean at Centre de la Vieille Charité

At the Centre de la Vieille Charité, Marseille's museums have launched an exhibition titled 'Tattoo. Histories of the Mediterranean,' which traces the history of tattooing from ancient to contemporary times. It features early tattoos from regions like Egypt, Syria, and the Cyclades, and examines their medical, religious, political, and artistic significance. The exhibit highlights Marseille's distinctive connection to tattoo culture. It integrates insights from global art history, gender studies, and postcolonial themes, showcasing works from Italy, Algeria, the Balkans, Iran, Spain, and Cyprus through various media such as paintings, sculptures, and videos. Following the 2023 exhibit on Baya, it presents new pieces from artists like Choukri Mesli and includes a special installation by Denis Martinez.
