Tate Modern Uses VR to Recreate Modigliani's Studio

exhibition · 2026-05-05

For its major Modigliani exhibition, Tate Modern partners with HTC Vive to offer 'The Ochre Atelier,' a virtual reality experience reconstructing the artist's last Paris studio in 360-degree 3D graphics. Nine VR headsets are placed in the exhibition. This marks Tate's first use of VR in a traditional show. The project, developed by game studio Preloaded, involved five months of research to accurately recreate the building, interiors, and over 60 objects, including two virtual artworks: 'Jeanne Hébuterne' and 'Autoritratto' (both 1919). Visitors hear narrations based on testimonies from friends and art historians. Director Frances Morris expressed enthusiasm for expanding creative frontiers. Free timed tickets are available with exhibition entry. HTC plans a home version on Viveport by December 2017. The retrospective, curated by Nancy Ireson, Simonetta Fratelli, and Emma Lewis, runs until April 2, 2018, featuring around 100 works—the largest Modigliani show ever in Britain.
