Tate Modern Turns 20 with Kusama and Bourgeois Installations

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Tate Modern in London celebrates its 20th anniversary on May 11, 2020, with a program featuring major installations by Yayoi Kusama and Louise Bourgeois. The centerpiece is Kusama's 'Infinity Mirrored Room – Filled with the Brilliance of Life', previously shown at the museum in 2012, alongside her 'Chandelier of Grief', a rotating crystal chandelier room. In the Turbine Hall, Bourgeois's giant spider 'Maman' will be reinstalled, marking the first work visitors encountered when the museum opened in 2000. The anniversary also includes Lee Mingwei's performance 'Our Labyrinth', featuring a dancer sweeping grains, placed near 'Maman'. Other performances include Nedko Solakov's 'A Life (Black & White)' with two painters alternating white and black walls, Allora & Calzadilla's 'Balance of Power' with yoga practitioners in military uniforms, and Tunga's 'Xifópagas Capilares entre Nós' with twins connected by braided hair. A dedicated exhibition will showcase films, images, objects, and recordings from the museum's archive, tracing its history. Free staff-led audio narrations and a short film program at the Starr Cinema, including artist interviews and behind-the-scenes documentaries, will also be offered.
