Tate Modern's 'Surrealism Beyond Borders' spans 60 years and 50 nations
Tate Modern in London presents 'Surrealism Beyond Borders', a major exhibition running until August 24, 2022. The show, co-organized with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, spans 60 years and 50 countries across 11 rooms in the Eyal Ofer Galleries. It traces the global reach of Surrealism from its origins in 1920s Paris to its international manifestations. The movement was inspired by poet André Breton, who published the First Surrealist Manifesto in Paris in 1924 and remained its leading figure until his death in 1966. Breton was influenced by Sigmund Freud's theories of the unconscious mind, which suggested that dreams could reveal repressed emotions. Surrealism never became a single style; some artists used realistic techniques to depict dream imagery, while others employed abstract or automatic methods to bypass conscious control. The exhibition highlights connections and exchanges among artists from Brussels, Cairo, Mexico City, Prague, Tokyo, and beyond. A dedicated room outside the main show, in the 'Collection displays, in the studio' area, features works by original Parisian surrealists alongside international artists who developed their own approaches to the irrational. The exhibition includes clear explanatory texts and a comprehensive catalog. The show is accompanied by a photograph by Mario Bucolo.
