Tate Modern's Frida Kahlo Exhibition Examines Icon-Making
Tate Modern in London presents 'Frida: The Making of an Icon', running from 25 June to 3 January. Curated by Anna Müller, the show avoids a conventional retrospective, instead investigating how Kahlo became a global image. It features over 100 works, including Kahlo's self-portraits alongside pieces by Judy Chicago, Ana Mendieta, Kiki Smith, Yasumasa Morimura, and Martine Gutierrez. The exhibition is structured around themes of identity as performance, surrealist lineages, political readings through Chicana/o movements, and the phenomenon of 'Fridamania'—Kahlo's transformation into a commodity across fashion and digital culture. Diego Rivera and María Izquierdo are contextualized within Kahlo's intellectual milieu. The show positions Kahlo within Tate Modern's recent curatorial trajectory, which includes Tracey Emin, Yayoi Kusama, Olafur Eliasson, El Anatsui, and 'A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography'. Rather than a linear narrative, the exhibition presents Kahlo as a distributed field of references, where biography, politics, and aesthetics overlap. It argues that icons are processes produced through repetition and reinvention, not fixed endpoints.
