Tate Modern's Evolution from 2000 to 2016: Exhibitions, Performances, and Critical Essays

institutional · 2026-04-20

Tate Modern opened in 2000, marking a significant institutional milestone. The museum's programming from 2000 to 2016 included major exhibitions like Century City, Warhol, Cruel + Tender, Open Systems, Rings of Saturn, The World as a Stage, Yayoi Kusama, Damien Hirst, Henri Matisse, and The World Goes Pop. Performance art featured prominently with Tania Bruguera's Tatlin’s Whisper #5 and PJ Harvey's performance. The Unilever Series commissioned installations by Olafur Eliasson (The Weather Project) and Carsten Höller (Test Site). Critical essays accompanied the programming, with contributions from Sam Jacob on scale and expansion, Ben Street on entertainment and populism, Linda Nochlin on art history, Bob and Roberta Smith on participation and protest, Sara Wookey on multimedia and performance, and Marysia Lewandowska on networks and globalization. Matthew Collings contributed Art Crazy Nation in 2001 and an updated version in 2016. The museum expanded its facilities with the opening of The Tanks, dedicated to live art and installations. Tate Modern's reopening in 2016 followed this period of growth and diverse artistic engagement. Nicholas Serota was interviewed by Helen Sumpter about the institution's development.
