Tate Modern's £260m expansion opens June 17 with 10 new floors
Tate Modern's new wing, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, opens June 17, 2016, adding 60% more space with the Tank and Switch House. Director Nicholas Serota and new director Frances Morris unveiled plans for the 10-story building, which includes a restaurant by Jasper Morrison on the ninth floor. The Turbine Hall will feature a 7-meter tree sculpture by Ai Weiwei. The collection, 75% acquired after 2000, now includes artists from 57 countries, with works from Latin America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe alongside Rothko and Matisse. New acquisitions include Meschac Gaba, Sheela Gowda, and Cildo Meirelles. The Switch House will host Tate Exchange, an open experiment involving 50 organizations. The Boiler House presents four approaches to modern art, while the Switch House explores performance and choreography from the 1960s onward, featuring artists like Carl Andre, Roni Horn, David Medalla, and Ricardo Basbaum. The opening weekend includes performances by Tino Sehgal and Joseph Beuys, sponsored by Uniqlo and BMW Tate Live. On June 16, 3,000 students will preview the space, followed by three days of festivities with actors, performers, and choirs from Japan.
