Tate Modern Revisits 'Magiciens de la Terre' with Films and Debate

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From April 11 to 13, 2014, Tate Modern organized a weekend of discussions and film screenings to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the influential 1989 exhibition 'Magiciens de la Terre' held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Entitled 'Magiciens de la Terre Reconsidered', the event included six sessions that delved into the exhibition's film program and its enduring impact. The original exhibition showcased over 100 artists, with around half identified as non-Western, aiming to confront the Eurocentric perspective in the art scene. Featured filmmakers included David Byrne, Maya Deren, and Dziga Vertov, alongside others like Al Clah and Geraldo Sarno. Discussions addressed topics such as colonialism and globalization, with speakers like Lucy Steeds and Elvira Dyangani Ose. This initiative was a collaboration between Afterall Books, Tate Film, and Central Saint Martins.
