Tate Modern Acquires 10 Works at Frieze Fair with WME | IMG Support

market-auction · 2026-05-05

Tate Modern has acquired ten artworks at Frieze London through the Frieze Tate Fund initiative, now in its 13th year. The fund, launched in 2003, has enabled the purchase of over 100 works, many featured in the museum's new wing. This year, the fund received its first sponsorship from talent representation firm WME | IMG, contributing £150,000. The acquisitions include six pieces by Turkish artist Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin from Rampa gallery in Istanbul, three by Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes from Galeria Luisa Strina in São Paulo, and one by Malaysian artist Phillip Lai from Stuart Shave / Modern Art in London. The selection jury comprised four Tate curators—Clara Kim, Clarrie Wallis, Hannah Johnston, and Elsa Coustou—alongside guest jurors Jarosław Suchan, director of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, and María Inés Rodríguez, director of CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain in Bordeaux. Outgoing director Sir Nicholas Serota expressed gratitude to galleries and artists for their generosity in making the acquisitions possible. The purchases underscore Tate Modern's continued commitment to expanding its permanent collection despite internal changes and funding cuts.
