Tate Liverpool to close for over a year for £10m refurbishment
Beginning on 16 October 2023, Tate Liverpool will undergo a significant refurbishment, closing for over a year. This project is backed by a £10 million grant from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund, which is part of a £20 million collaborative proposal with National Museums Liverpool. The architectural firm 6a will manage the renovation, with an anticipated reopening in 2025, although a specific date has not been announced. In the meantime, Tate Liverpool plans to host offsite events, including a mobile art gallery that will travel through local neighborhoods. A representative stated that the institution aims to reduce the impact on employees and prevent job losses, with ongoing consultations. The current exhibition, 'Dark Waters,' showcasing works by JMW Turner and a sound piece by Lamin Fofana, has been extended until 24 September 2023. Additionally, Tate Liverpool will be a venue for the 12th edition of the Liverpool Biennial, scheduled from 10 June to 17 September 2023.
