Tate Britain to Mount Major William Blake Exhibition This Autumn
This autumn, Tate Britain will present the largest survey of William Blake's work ever held in the UK, featuring around 300 works, some rarely exhibited. The show aims to rediscover the visionary painter, engraver, and poet. For the first time, two emblematic works—The Spiritual Form of Nelson Guiding Leviathan (c. 1805–9) and The Spiritual Form of Pitt Guiding Behemoth (c. 1805)—will be digitally enlarged and projected onto the museum's walls at the monumental scale Blake originally imagined. The originals will be displayed nearby as part of a reconstruction of Blake's 1809 exhibition, his only and unsuccessful attempt to gain public recognition as a painter. The gallery will recreate the domestic room above the family hosiery shop where that exhibition took place, allowing visitors to see the works under the same conditions as in 1809. The exhibition runs from September 11, 2019, to February 2, 2020, at Tate Britain, Millbank, Westminster, London SW1P 4RG, UK.
