Tate Britain to Host Major Edward Burne-Jones Retrospective After 40 Years

exhibition · 2026-05-04

After a 40-year hiatus, Tate Britain will present a retrospective dedicated to Edward Burne-Jones (1833–1898) in autumn 2018. The exhibition, titled 'Edward Burne-Jones: Preraffaellita Visionario', runs from October 24, 2018 to February 24, 2019. Burne-Jones, a Pre-Raphaelite artist from Birmingham, was initially an outsider due to his rejection of Victorian industrial ideals but became a key figure in European fin-de-siècle art and a pioneer of Symbolism, drawing inspiration from myth, legend, and the Bible. The show will assemble major works such as 'Love among the Ruins' (1870–73) and 'The Wheel of Fortune' (1883), with two rooms dedicated to his monumental narrative cycles—the story of Perseus and the dreamlike fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty—exhibited together for the first time. The retrospective also explores the role of decorative arts in his career, including his long collaboration with William Morris, with whom he shared the goal of reaching a broad audience through formal beauty.
