Tate Britain presenta una grande retrospettiva su Whistler nel 2026
La Tate Britain presenterà la più grande retrospettiva europea su James McNeill Whistler degli ultimi tre decenni dal 21 maggio al 27 settembre 2026. La mostra presenta 150 opere tra dipinti, disegni, stampe e progetti, provenienti da collezioni internazionali. I punti salienti includono l'iconico "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (La madre di Whistler) in prestito dal Musée d'Orsay, i primi taccuini di schizzi esposti per la prima volta e la serie completa dei "Notturni". La mostra ripercorre la carriera di Whistler dalla sua nascita a Lowell, Massachusetts nel 1834, attraverso la sua infanzia internazionale a San Pietroburgo e Londra, i suoi anni bohémien a Parigi, la sua battaglia legale con John Ruskin, il suo soggiorno veneziano e il suo tardo insegnamento all'Académie Carmen. Particolare attenzione è dedicata alla sua innovativa produzione incisoria, al suo capolavoro decorativo "Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room" e ai suoi radicali notturni tonalisti. La mostra si apre con una ricostruzione del suo studio e include autoritratti, ritratti di amici e prestiti dalla National Gallery of Art di Washington.
