Tartu, named the European Capital of Culture for 2024, boasts an extensive array of museums. The Estonian National Museum, designed by Lina Ghotmeh, Dan Dorell, and Tsuyoshi Tane and opened in 2016, showcases more than a million artifacts related to Estonian and Finno-Ugric cultures. Since 2001, the Tartu City Museum, located in Catherine's House, has chronicled the city's past and includes the Song Museum, KGB Museum, and Oskar Luts House Museum. The Estonian Literary Museum oversees archives of history and folklore. Founded in 1940, the Tartu Art Museum features over 25,000 pieces by Estonian artists. Additionally, the Tartu Toy and Theatre Museum and the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum contain collections from the late 19th to 20th centuries, with the latter preserving over 150,000 items.
