Tarek Atoui's Sonic Installations at S.M.A.K.
Tarek Atoui (b. 1980, Beirut, Lebanon) presents his first solo exhibition at a Belgian museum, 'the Shore / a place I’d like to be', at S.M.A.K. in Ghent. The electro-acoustic composer and artist creates sonic-sculptural landscapes that combine musical instruments, electronic devices, computers, and everyday objects. His installations encourage active listening and participation, breaking traditional power relations between sense and reason. The exhibition includes existing works from projects like 'WITHIN' (2013–ongoing) and 'The Whisperers' (2021–2022), plus new works '66 Soft Cells' and 'Windhouse #1'. The title alludes to a dichotomy between a living room and an experimental laboratory that merge within the space. A series of performances by Atoui and invited musicians accompanies the exhibition.
