Tarek Atoui's At-Tāriq Installation Explores Andalusian and Amazigh Sound Traditions at Thyssen-Bornemisza
Tarek Atoui's exhibition, titled At-Tāriq, is currently showcased at TBA21 within Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, running until 18 May. This sound installation draws inspiration from the musical traditions of North Africa and Andalusia, originating from Atoui's 2023 residency in Córdoba, where he worked alongside musicians Ziúr, Susie Ibarra, and Nancy Mounir. He gathered low-fidelity audio recordings from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, which contribute to the installation's soundscape. The space includes five yellow carpets sourced from women's cooperatives, along with materials such as wicker and ceramics, complemented by amplifiers. Atoui presents five unique sonic environments that promote movement and attentive listening. The title alludes to the 86th surah of the Qur'an, representing a nomadic journey, with aspirations for future project expansions.
