Tarek Al-Ghoussein, Palestinian-Kuwaiti photographer exploring exile and displacement, dies at 60

Tarek Al-Ghoussein, a renowned photographer who delved into themes of Palestinian exile and displacement, has passed away. He was born in 1962 in Kuwait City to Palestinian parents who were exiles. His life journey took him through Morocco, Japan, and the U.S. before he ultimately settled in the UAE, where he served as a faculty member at New York University Abu Dhabi. Al-Ghoussein's artistic endeavors commenced post-photojournalism, highlighted by his Self-Portrait series initiated in 2002. His significant works include a photograph taken outside New Scotland Yard and his detention experiences with Jordanian police in 2003. His later focus shifted to abandoned locations and the Odysseus series, which portrayed Abu Dhabi's islands. He represented Kuwait at the 2013 Venice Biennale and showcased his art in prominent collections, such as the Guggenheim and the British Museum.
