Taranto to Launch Biennale del Mediterraneo in 2022

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

In 2022, Taranto is set to host the inaugural Biennale del Mediterraneo, an international initiative centered on art and architecture within the Mediterranean region. The project, conceived by Mario Lupano of Iuav University of Venice and in collaboration with Italy's Ministry of Culture, was organized by a team that included Undersecretary Anna Laura Orrico, formed in July 2021. Highlights of the biennial include a municipal art gallery at Palazzo Archita and the UNESCO candidacy for Isola Madre. The announcement took place during a press conference at Taranto's Biblioteca Comunale Acclavio, with Puglia Region President Michele Emiliano present. Minister Dario Franceschini emphasized that the biennial seeks to promote Taranto's cultural heritage and foster contemporary art, following the city's unsuccessful bid for Italian Capital of Culture 2022.
