Tao Hui's Video Art Explores Narrative Structure and Ordinary Lives
In 2015, Tao Hui held a solo exhibition called '1 Character' and '7 Materials' at Aike-Dellarco in Shanghai. This installation was divided into two parts, featuring a sound piece in a setup resembling a telephone booth and a video displayed on a bus shelter screen, creatively linking sound and visuals. Tao's approach challenges traditional storytelling in video art. Born in 1987 in Sichuan, now part of Chongqing, he lives and works in Beijing. His 2013 piece, 'Talk About Body', shows him in female Muslim clothing, analyzing his body from an anthropological viewpoint. The silent video 'Excessive' tells the story of a girl with an extra finger through subtitles, with a minimalist style similar to Lars Von Trier's 'Dogville'. Tao's work often explores identity and emotion through first-person narratives. He received the Grand Prize at the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil in São Paulo in 2015, and his recent video installations hint at exciting new directions in his art.
