Tao Hui's First Hong Kong Solo Exhibition Explores Chinese Loneliness Through Bleak Multimedia Works

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Tao Hui's inaugural institutional solo exhibition in Hong Kong presents recent multimedia works examining loneliness and displacement in contemporary China. The show features large-scale video installations and constructed architectural spaces that explore urban alienation, migrant worker hardships, and the isolated lives of live streamers. Key works include 'Money Grab Hand' (2024), a curtain-like installation of glass chicken feet symbolizing both sustenance and fortune, and 'Cuddle' (2021), a ceramic toilet crushed by a stone snake on geometric wooden hills. The centerpiece 'Chilling Terror Sweeps the North' (2024) is a 26-minute two-channel video installation housed in a plexiglass structure resembling religious architecture, depicting a couple from different Chinese regions struggling with cultural and linguistic divides. Another video work, 'Hardworking' (2023–24), shows a live streamer's solitary existence, backed by a wooden sculpture of a melting man supporting the screen. Throughout the exhibition, Tao Hui addresses class divisions, fragile connections to roots, and the psychological costs of China's economic transformation without offering resolution. The works incorporate references to Chinese folk traditions including xue shehuo horror performances and regional musical instruments like the sanxian lute. The exhibition runs through February 2 at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong.
