Tanja Ostojić on Berlin's art scene, Yugoslav identity, and political art's marginalization

artist · 2026-04-19

In Spring 2002, Tanja Ostojić relocated from Belgrade to Germany, initially residing in Düsseldorf before moving to Berlin for her Integration Project and a documentary focused on a deportation jail. Although she has spent over fifteen years in Berlin, she has yet to hold a solo exhibition there, which she attributes to her work being "overly political, overly feminist." Her art enjoys greater recognition in Vienna, where the cultural ties to the former Yugoslavia enhance appreciation. Ostojić observes that gentrification has transformed Berlin's art scene, impacting artist-run spaces. Her notable projects include the Misplaced Women? series and Lexicon of Tanjas Ostojić (2011–17). She also critiques the limited funding available in post-Yugoslav art spaces and emphasizes the significance of national identity. Recently, she participated in art book fairs at HKW and Hamburger Bahnhof.
