Tania Mouraud's Confrontational Works at Frac Basse-Normandie
Tania Mouraud's solo exhibition at Frac Basse-Normandie in Caen, France, from September 27 to November 30, 2003, transforms the entire space into an environment where her pieces are integral. On the ground floor, the video 'Sightseeing' (also shown at the Fiac's Vidéo Cube via Galerie Moussion) features a slow ascent through a snowy landscape filmed from inside a car, set to music by Claudine Movsessian. The final destination is revealed as Natzweiler-Struthof, a Nazi concentration and extermination camp in France, with a fogged windshield obscuring the view. Adjacent, a wall drawing from 1989 reproduces the Nazi command 'count yourselves five by five' in stretched black letters. Upstairs, the new video 'Le Verger' juxtaposes idyllic orchard scenes with apocalyptic TV footage (CNN, BBC, including the declaration of war on Iraq) and internet images, accompanied by a violent soundtrack punctuated by a child's cry of 'Maman!'. The exhibition underscores Mouraud's three-decade career and her influence on a generation of artists examining global crises, blending formal rigor with urgent political commentary.
