Tania Bruguera to Create Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern Turbine Hall

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Cuban artist and activist Tania Bruguera has been selected for the 2018 Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. Her new site-specific installation will be on view from October 2, 2018, to February 24, 2019. The Hyundai Commission series, funded by Korean automaker Hyundai Motor, began in 2014 after the earlier Unilever Commission ended in 2012. The 11-year agreement is valued at $8 million. Bruguera, born in Havana in 1968, is known for politically engaged works that challenge power structures and advocate for personal freedoms. She has participated in major international exhibitions including biennials and Documenta. Her practice often addresses the political, economic, and social conditions in Cuba, and she has provocatively run for the Cuban presidency. The Turbine Hall, a former power station, has hosted iconic installations such as Olafur Eliasson's The Weather Project (2003), Carsten Höller's slides, and Ai Weiwei's sunflower seeds. Bruguera's project remains undisclosed until October.
