Taloi Havini Wins Artes Mundi 10 Prize, Exhibits Works on Bougainville Mining Impact

Taloi Havini has been honored with the Artes Mundi 10 award, thanks to a partnership with the Bagri Foundation. Her praised exhibition is currently on display at Mostyn in Llandudno and Chapter in Cardiff, running until February 25. The standout piece, a three-channel video installation titled 'Habitat,' reveals the environmental impact of open-cut mining in her native Bougainville. After being shown in Sydney, Canada, Hawaii, and Paris, it combines drone footage with stories from matrilineal landowners. Another work, 'Where the rivers flow (Panguna, Jaba, Pangara, Konawiru),' features photographs that deepen this narrative. At Chapter, 'Hyena (Night and Day)' connects family images with coral visuals, highlighting climate change threats to reef rituals. Influenced by artists like Zarina Bhimji, her work represents Indigenous perspectives. The award will support future collaborative projects in Bougainville, with other nominees including Mounira Al Solh and Carolina Caycedo.
