Talli Architects' Villa Margo: A Dark-Green CLT House in Helsinki Designed to Age Gracefully
Villa Margo, a dark-green CLT residence designed by Helsinki's Arkkitehtuuri- ja muotoilutoimisto Talli, has been completed for a family of four in a densely populated area of the Finnish capital. Named after a literary work, the house harmonizes with its surroundings, drawing inspiration from the existing vegetation, exposed bedrock, and a bohemian vibe. The two-story structure features a hipped roof, outdoor terraces, and windows that highlight a smooth rock surface revealed during demolition. Additionally, a single-story black garden building, finished with traditional tar and a green roof, serves as a music production studio. The design incorporates light spruce interiors, dark red terracotta tiles, and linseed oil paint on the facade, which will mature over time. Sustainable elements include geothermal heating, planned solar panels, fan-assisted natural ventilation, and CLT construction. Every tree and plant on the site was preserved, and the house is intended to age purposefully, reflecting a Nordic tradition of design through weathering.
