Talking Matter: A Sonic Journey Through Folkestone Fringe
Artists Iginio De Luca and Luis Do Rosario created the video 'Talking Matter' during a residency in Folkestone, England, from October to November 2023. The project, funded by Magic Carpets platform and implemented by Latitudo Art Projects, captures the atmosphere of Folkestone Fringe through sound and touch. In the video, De Luca walks through the area with a microphone, using his hands to produce acoustic stimuli from various surfaces and objects, including a Sound Mirror, a concave military device used for amplifying enemy sounds. The sonic narrative includes metallic railings, wooden fences, metal sheets, domestic walls, an ancient church, old railway tracks, and boat hulls in the dry harbor, mixed with natural sounds like seagulls and waves. The video was screened at Folkestone's Fishing Heritage and History Museum during the Profound Sound Festival, inviting viewers to rediscover their surroundings through sound. The piece ends with the artist's back facing the sea, silently urging the audience to 'close your eyes.'
