Takashi Homma's New Waves on Display at Selfridges London

Takashi Homma, a photographer celebrated for his portrayal of Tokyo's urban landscape and youth culture, is currently engaged in a project called New Waves, which centers on the ocean. Initiated in 2000 and compiled for the first time in 2013, this series depicts waves rolling onto the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Homma explains that his approach addresses the challenge of capturing the decisive moment, yet he refrains from focusing on any specific moments, instead clicking the shutter as each wave arrives. His photographs are featured in a temporary exhibition at Selfridges in London, alongside works from the Été Celine and Automne 2026 collections. This display, which aligns with Michael Rider's avant-garde vision for Celine as highlighted by Alexander Fury in his review of the Autumn/Winter 2026 show, will be open until 27 June 2026. At 64, Homma previously received the Kimura Ihei Commemorative Photography Award for his 1998 work Tokyo Suburbia. He mentioned in an interview that his images aim to be documentary rather than event-focused, encouraging viewers to find intrigue without overanalyzing.
