Taiyō Matsumoto's Milan exhibition showcases Tekkon kinkreet and Sunny
The exhibition 'Taiyō Matsumoto: Love is all you need' at WOW Spazio Fumetto in Milan presents over fifty original works by the Japanese manga artist, including illustrations and pages from Tekkon kinkreet (1993-1994) and Sunny (2010). Curated by Jacopo Costa Buranelli, director of J-Pop Manga, the show is Matsumoto's first solo exhibition in Milan and is free to the public. Matsumoto, born in Tokyo in 1967, gained international recognition after the English translation of Tekkon kinkreet in 2007, winning the Eisner Award in 2008. His style blends European artistic sensibility with Japanese precision, influenced by a stay in Paris in the early 1990s. The exhibition highlights his stylistic evolution from the sharp black-and-white lines of Tekkon kinkreet to the softer watercolor tones of Sunny, which won the Gran Guinigi Lucca Comics 2016. Sunny, published in Italy by J-Pop Manga, follows orphaned children in a group home, reflecting themes of dreams and fears.
